Irritable Bowel Syndrome – IBS in Cats (September 2019)

Irritable bowel syndrome can be a pest in the life of both cats and dogs, much like it affects humans.

The Causes of IBS in Cats

IBS is generally caused by chronic inflammation of a cat’s bowels and can actually be linked to stress.

For example, a cat may experience IBS due to a change in diet or a change of their home after you have moved.

Gastrointestinal troubles, mental distress, diet intolerance, and food allergies are the main, suspected causes.

Unfortunately, there is no direct link between IBS and cats. There can be underlying causes that won’t be seen straight away, so further testing and attention will be needed.

Symptoms of IBS in Cats

Listed below are the most commonly seen symptoms of IBS in cats:

  • Chronic diarrhea
  • Straining to use the litter box
  • Cramping
  • Bloating
  • Abdominal pain
  • Vomiting and/or nausea
  • Gas
  • Mucus in the feces
  • Frequent passing of minimal amounts of feces

If you notice any of the symptoms above, bring your cat to the vet as soon as possible.

Treating IBS With Your Vet and at Home

You need to work with your vet on a treatment plan that will identify the cause of the IBS and treat it.

However, changes will also need to be made at home, too.

For example, if IBS has come after a recent change in your cat’s food, you need to switch back to the old brand or try a different one.

Unfortunately, determining the source can be difficult, especially if you are unable to remove it.

Either way, talk to your cat’s vet and try to work out a solution to the problem. IBS can easily be treated with the help of your vet.

Preventing IBS in Cats

The best way to prevent IBS in cats is to minimize stress in the home and be very careful when switching your cat to a different brand of food.

Ensuring your cat has a proper, healthy diet that goes along with their age, breed, and level of activity is one of the best ways to prevent IBS from occurring in your cat.
