As I mentioned in my other mushroom post, I’m not a fan of mushrooms – they taste like nothing to me.
However, can cats eat mushrooms? – are mushrooms poisonous to cats?
Let’s get the answers to these questions.
Can Cats Eat Mushrooms?
Yes and no, cats can and cannot eat mushrooms.
Wild mushrooms are toxic to cats, while store-bought mushrooms in minuscule amounts are not.
Cats don’t exactly need mushrooms and other vegetation in their diets – they have a strict meat-based diet.
Cats can often beg for mushrooms and enjoy a little bit when they’re cooked, but you need to be careful.
The Risks of Giving Your Cat a Mushroom
Portobello, button, and shiitake mushrooms, which are all store-bought depending on where you live, are all safe to give to your kitty.
Plain, store-bought mushrooms that are cooked thoroughly and given in small amounts are perfectly fine for a cat to have.
Wild mushrooms, however, are an entirely different story.
Cat Ate Wild Mushroom?
If you think your cat has ingested a wild mushroom, look out for the following signs and symptoms:
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Slow heartbeat
- Lethargy
- Constricted pupils
- Excessive salivation
If you see any of these symptoms, or you know for a fact your cat has eaten a wild mushroom, bring her to the vet immediately.
